North Queensland Floods - January/February 2009

On 31 January 2009, Tropical Cyclone Ellie caused a rain depression in Far North/Northern Queensland resulting in substantial flooding to townships between Townsville and Cairns. Over 3,000 homes in the Ingham area have been affected by these floods with flooding also reported through Ingham businesses and the town centre.

Floods impact on the lives of many people.
After watching this video you will need to think of some of the ways in which the people and the environment may have been affected.
Are the effects all negative - perhaps you should also consider any positive effects of flood.

Think of at least 3 ways in which your everyday life would be changed after extensive flooding.
Explain 3 ways in which the environment would be changed.
What are the positive effects that flooding could lead to?

Think of at least 3 ways in which your everyday life would be changed after extensive flooding. Your crops would be ruined because the water would kill the plants that grow into vegetables. Your house would be wrecked because the water would get in through the cracks or underneath your door. Animals would get frightened or drown.

Explain 3 ways in which the environment would be changed. Floods can erode the top layer of soil which is needed when the farmers are planting their crops. If this happens the vegetables will end up dieing. There would be puddles and dams would overflow with all the water going into it. Plants would die caused by suffocation due to so much water.

What are the positive effects that flooding could lead to? The good effects that could happen are the water would go into the dams, the grass would go greener, we would get more water and animals will be able to eat the green grass.

  2. It will stop us from getting food.
It will stop us from getting energy.
And we would not get to school.
    The grass will die.
    Animals will die.
    And fruit and veges.
In droughts we might need the water

  3. The 3 ways it would effect my every day life is:
Not to be able to get to the road.
    Not able to have power.
Not to be able to get to school in the car.

The 3 ways that the environment will be effected:
    Land erosion
    Flooded dams
    Farmer’s crop damage

What are the positive effects that flooding could lead to?
The dams would be filled up
The dams would be naturally flushed out
Plenty of water for the farmers

  4. 1.Your crops will be damaged by all the soaking water going into the crops. Our animals and other native animals would drown from the high raising water.nearly all the houses in the suburb or state would be greatly damaged by the hard waters .

2.Alot of our vegies, fruits and plants will be died out.We would have less species of animals. Our pools rivers and dams will be damaged with the amount of dirty water in them.

3.There will be fresh water for us to drink.
Animals will be able to eat nice fresh green grass. We will have enough water to last us for a quite a long time and we could use some of it for bushfires.

  5. Your every day life would be changed after the extensive flooding because ...

    1. Your backyard would be flooded so children cannot play outside anymore.

    2. Roads would be flooded so adults would not be able to drive their children to school.

    3. You would not be able to go to the supermarket because there is no way to get there.

The extensive flooding would effect the environment because ...

    1. People would die because they would be wiped out from the water.

    2. Animals would die because they would be wiped out from the water.

    3. Plants would die because they have had too much water.

Yes flooding is bad but there is also some positive effects on flooding too, like ...

    1. The grass would grow because of the water.

    2. The animals that survived throughout the flood would have plenty of water to drink.

    3. People would be able to swim outside because their is a lot of water for them to swim in.

1.One way it will change my life is that I would have no home and no place to live.
2.Another way is that I will have nothing left of my things.
3.The last reason is that I would have to find a home to live in.
Explain 3 ways in which the environment would be changed.

1.The ground would be just mud because the water would wash the grass away.

2.The ground would be clear because all of the buildings would have collapsed in the flood.

3.All the sewer would go into the sea and cause pollution.

What are the positive effects that flooding could lead to?

1.The dams will fill up so we have lots of water to drink.

  8. 3 ways in which everyday life would b e changed after flooding are:

1.There would be a massive clean up needed to remove the mud and silt out of the houses.
2.The price of fresh food would increase due to loss of crops.
3.It will bring people together to work as a community.
3 ways the environment would be changed are:

1There would be pollution in the rivers because the sewerage would
    overflow.
2.The flood would erode the top layer of soil which is needed for plants to grow in as that is where the nutrients are stored in the soil.
3.Plants and trees might die from too much water or trees might uproot and fall over and animals might drown.

Some positive effects that flooding could lead to solving our drought problem also flushing out our rivers. It would increase the amount of green grass for the animals to eat.

All your electricity will be shut down because the water can get through the electricity rooms.
You wouldn’t be able to walk any where because there would be to much water everywhere.
All your toys will be wet and damaged because the water can get into your room .

The dirt will become mud because the dirt is dry and when it gets wet it turns into wet mud.
All the shops and houses would be all wet and damaged because the water can get through cracks and the spaces under the doors.
All the drainage in the town will get blocked off because all the water is trying to rush through at the same time and it all gets block.

What are the positive effects that flooding could lead to?

The dam water levels rise because the water is over flowing into the dams.
The grass gets watered and gets lots of moisture ,the grass needs lots of water to survive.
We get more water to drink and to survive everyone needs water to survive and if we don’t get enough water we can die.

Explain 3 ways in which the environment would be changed.
What are the positive effects that flooding could lead to?
Your every day life would be changed by having no electricity because power lines are cut down, making sickness come round by not being able to eat because the refrigerator isn`t working and by not being able to get out because there is too much water around.
The environment would be changed by trees that had fallen down because the rain pushed them down, the grass would be greener because lots of water has fallen on it and power poles would be knocked down because the ground supporting them would be too soft to hold them up.

One reason how the extensive flooding could change my ordinary life would be that my home would be flooded with water and I would have nowhere to sleep.

Finally, if my car was outside it would flood all inside and we couldn’t drive our car for days.

Explain 3 ways in which the environment would be changed.

Another reason why it would ruin the environment is that it could flood the farms and the farmers would have no crop.

Lastly, it might be too much water for the plants and they could die.

What are the positive effects that flooding could lead to?

One positive effect that could happen after a flood is athother part of the countrie might have a bushfire.

Another positive thing that could lead to after a flood is that it could have hailstorms and residents might need to protect their house against any damage.

The last positive thing that might happen is that it could possibly lead to a cyclone and it would be hard for the families to cope.
